Country Profile & Environmental Management Partnerships

Lesotho is an active partner and ratified member state collaborating with the Africa Institute to address environmental challenges, implement environmentally sound management of hazardous waste, promote circular economy practices, and protect human health and ecosystems.

Active & Collaborative Projects

The Africa Institute coordinates and executes several national and regional initiatives in Lesotho to support sustainable chemicals management, textile circularity, e-waste management, and environmental protection.

Ongoing SADC PCB Elimination

SADC PCBs Elimination Project

Disposal of PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) oils contained in transformers and disposal of capacitors containing PCB in Southern Africa, demonstrating a regional approach to environmentally sound management (ESM) of PCB equipment and wastes.

Focus: Hazardous Chemical Disposal

Scope: 12 Southern African Countries (incl. Lesotho)

Ongoing Textile Circular Economy

Textile & Garment Sector Circular Economy

Promotion of Circular Economy in the Textile and Garment Sector through sustainable management of chemicals and waste in Lesotho, Madagascar, South Africa, and Ethiopia, phasing out hazardous chemicals and supporting sustainable product design.

Focus: Circular Economy & Industrial Pollution

Scope: Lesotho, Madagascar, South Africa, Ethiopia

Ongoing Electronics Value Chain

Electronics Value Chain Circularity & POPs Reduction

Promoting circularity and resource efficiency in the electronics value chain across Southern African countries to reduce the adverse impacts of POPs, uPOPs, and heavy metals (such as mercury) across the life cycle of EEE.

Focus: E-Waste & POPs Reduction

Scope: SADC Countries (incl. Lesotho)

Ongoing Rotterdam Convention

Industrial Chemicals Registration & Rotterdam Convention

Strengthening implementation of the Rotterdam Convention and establishing a national registration system for industrial chemicals in Lesotho to protect human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals.

Focus: Chemicals Registration & Policy
