Country Profile & Environmental Management Partnerships

Namibia is a crucial partner country of the Africa Institute. Through collaborative regional strategies and capacity-building frameworks, Namibia works toward the environmentally sound management of hazardous chemicals and wastes, aiming to reduce environmental degradation and safeguard public health.

Active & Collaborative Projects

The Africa Institute coordinates and executes several capacity building, chemical management, and plastic circularity projects in Namibia to fulfill SADC and international environmental goals.

Ongoing SADC PCB Elimination

SADC PCBs Elimination Project

Disposal of PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) oils contained in transformers and disposal of capacitors containing PCB in Southern Africa, demonstrating a regional approach to environmentally sound management (ESM) of PCB oils, equipment, and wastes.

Focus: Hazardous Chemical Disposal

Scope: 12 Southern African Countries (incl. Namibia)

Ongoing SADC GEM Project

Electronics Value Chain Circularity & Resource Efficiency

Reducing the adverse impacts of POPs, uPOPs, and heavy metals (such as mercury) on human health and environment across the life cycle of electrical and electronic equipment in SADC countries.

Focus: E-Waste & Heavy Metal Reduction

Scope: SADC Countries (incl. Namibia)
