Country Profile & Environmental Management Partnerships

Malawi collaborates actively with the Africa Institute to build capacity and execute programs aimed at meeting multilateral environmental agreements. By participating in regional networks, Malawi works to address waste management difficulties, eliminate toxic chemicals, and safeguard ecosystems and public health from pollution risks.

Active & Collaborative Projects

The Africa Institute coordinates and executes several capacity building and chemical management projects in Malawi to fulfill Basel, Stockholm, and SADC environmental goals.

Ongoing Stockholm Convention NIP

Stockholm Convention NIP Review & Update

Facilitating the implementation of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) through the development, review, and update of National Implementation Plans (NIPs) and submission to the Conference of the Parties (COP).

Focus: POPs Policy & Convention Implementation

Scope: Participating Countries (incl. Malawi)

Ongoing Plastic Waste Capacity

Strengthening Knowledge and Capacity to Prevent and Reduce Releases of Plastic Waste

Protecting human health and the environment from plastic waste, contributing to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) targets 3.9, 5.1, 6.3, 11.6, 12.4, and 14.1.

Focus: Plastic Waste Control & SDGs

Scope: Malawi and Zimbabwe

Ongoing SADC PCB Elimination

SADC PCBs Elimination Project

Disposal of PCB (Polychlorinated Biphenyls) oils contained in transformers and disposal of capacitors containing PCB in Southern Africa, demonstrating a regional approach to environmentally sound management (ESM) of PCB oils, equipment, and wastes.

Focus: Hazardous Chemical Disposal

Scope: 12 Southern African Countries (incl. Malawi)
